Chelsea Planning Commission approves St. Joseph Mercy rezoning request

By Lisa Carolin

Following St. Joseph Mercy’s change in its rezoning request for two parcels located along the north side of the intersection of East Old US 12 and Fairways Lane from RS-2 (Single Family Residential District-Moderate Density) to O-1 (Office District), the Chelsea Planning Commission unanimously approved (Peter Shaw absent) the request at its Nov. 19 meeting.

St. Joseph Mercy originally requested that the parcels be rezoned to MC (medical center) but changed the request to O-1 (office district).

The lots total 3.32 acres, are vacant, and are owned by Silver Maples Chelsea, which has been in the process of swapping land with St. Joseph Mercy, Inc. for the last decade.

St. Joseph Mercy’s plan is to use the land for medical offices.

The planning commission also approved a final site plan amendment from the United Methodist Retirement Communities for the Kresge Building addition on parcel 06-06-11-48014 to enclose an outdoor balcony to be used as an art room.

Following a review of Planning Commission Bylaws at the October and November work session meetings, the planning commission approved its revisions to the bylaws. That will now go to Chelsea City Council for approval.

The Planning Commission also approved its meeting dates in 2020.
