Chelsea Relay For Life less than a month away

Chelsea’s Relay For Life is Saturday, May 18 at Pierce Lake Elementary and goes until Sunday, May 19 at 10 a.m.

Teams have members that will be walking the track all night to symbolize that “Cancer Never Sleeps.”

More than just a fundraising event, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life offers our community a way to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember loved ones lost and fight back against a disease that takes too much from too many.

Relay is often defined as a celebration of life, symbolizing the courage and spirit of the more than 600,000 cancer survivors who, each year, proudly walk the event’s survivor lap at more than 5,200 Relay For Life events worldwide.

And, local cancer survivors and their caregivers will be honored during activities at Chelsea’s event at 10 a.m. Survivor celebration activities offer both survivors and caregivers an opportunity to experience healing, receive support, and celebrate their collective victory over cancer. 

This inspiring lap honors the courage of all who have defeated cancer as survivors (anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer) join to walk the opening lap – unified in victory and in hope.

It’s an emotional example that Relay For Life is ensuring more lives are saved every year, according to event organizers. It’s also a time to cheer them on letting them know they are not alone in the fight against cancer.

Following the Survivors Lap, participants can attend the Survivors Brunch, a time of camaraderie and celebration.

After dark, those who have been touched by cancer are honored, and those who have lost their battle, are remembered during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer.

All donations received for luminaria and the Relay For Life as a whole are used to fund the American Cancer Society’s mission to save lives and create a world with more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back against cancer.
