This week, the Chelsea Area Senior Center was awarded a $14,000 grant from the Helen McCalla Trust Fund to install automatic handicapped accessible doors inside the center allowing members easier access to the office and activity rooms.

“This facility improvement will help us meet the needs of our diverse senior population,” says Trinh Pifer, executive director of the senior center, in a press release.

“We have some seniors with limited mobility who come to the center daily for lunch, exercise, and to connect with others,” she says, adding, “This improved access will provide them greater independence.”

For more than 30 years, the Chelsea Senior Center has been a growing community asset, providing much needed programs, resources, and services to senior citizens living in the Chelsea area, Pifer says.

With almost 700 members, the center provides 30-40 programs every week that support the needs of older adults.

“We are really thankful to the Helen McCalla Trust Fund for their support,” she says.

The Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and is located at 512 Washington St. on the Washington Street Education Center campus.

Information about programs and services can be found here or by calling 475-9242.
