(Chelsea Update is running a series on businesses in Chelsea beginning with businesses that belong to the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce.)

Merkel Furniture and Carpet One has been in the same location, at 205 South Main St. in downtown Chelsea since 1924, and this is their fourth generation of family ownership.

“Additionally, the southern-most building in the ‘Merkel Block’  was built by our ancestor, Martin Merkel, in 1907,” said George Merkel, an owner of Merkel Furniture.

The store specializes is quality home and office furniture as well as flooring rugs, and mattresses.

Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce logo“We are a full-service company, which includes floor measuring, floor installation, and furniture delivery,” said Merkel. “A lot of people aren’t aware that Merkel has the largest in-store selection of Stears and Foster, Tempur-pedic, and Sealy mattresses in Washtenaw County.”

Merkel Furniture and Carpet One also offers certified, professional interior designers on staff every day of the week, who can help with remodeling or designing a room.

Much of the furniture the store carries is made in the U.S.

“Chelsea has been and will continue to be a wonderful place to live and to do business,” said Merkel. “We’re honored to be in a town with such a strong sense of community that spans across several generations, whose members have put a significant emphasis on creating and maintaining a vibrant, successful downtown that has provided everyone in our town and beyond a great array of dining options, shopping, and services.”
