Choose Chelsea: Arctic Breakaway restaurant

By Lisa Carolin

The economic effects of Covid 19 are being felt hard by businesses in Chelsea. Chelsea Update is talking to individual business owners in the area to see how they are coping. How can we help your business or non-profit with a story? Please email [email protected] and let us know. We’re here to assist you.

Joshua Glaspie is the general manager of Arctic Breakaway, which is located on the second floor of the Arctic Coliseum at 501 Coliseum Dr. in Chelsea. It’s both a restaurant and a sports bar and has been around since 2008. Currently, there are 30 employees.

Glaspie says the restaurant wants to ensure a safe environment during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Because we have high school and college teams playing sports in the building, we have gone above and beyond to ensure we provide the safest environment for our guests and employees,” said Glaspie. “We have limited the building capacity to 50 percent, follow strict protocols with our employees, check everyone’s temperatures before they are allowed entry into the building, masks must be worn until seated, and everything in the restaurant is sanitized every two hours.”

Tables at Arctic Breakaway are spaced 6-feet apart.

Glaspie says the restaurant offers senior citizen meals at a 10-percent discount every day and the same discount to police and firefighters as well as first responders and military personnel.

Arctic Breakaway is a sports bar with 27 televisions including a 110-inch state of the art laser projector and an appropriately inspired name – Arctic for the Arctic Coliseum ice rink, and Breakaway, which is the term for a specific hockey play when a player with the puck has no one but the goaltender to stop him from taking a shot on goal.

“We serve high end bar food including burgers, pizzas, pastas, and wings along with a full breakfast menu available every day until 3 p.m.,” said Glaspie. “Our signature specials are our Michigan sports specials like $2 domestic pints, $6 domestic pitchers, and 50-cent wings during all Michigan sports that are live on TV.”

He said burgers and pizzas are diner favorites, and there are nine Signature Burgers named after all our favorite Michigan sports teams including the Bulldogs Burger created in honor of our Mighty Chelsea Bulldogs.

There is also a giant stuffed pizza named The Yzerman, which is basically two pizzas baked together and slathered in garlic butter and parmesan cheese.

Also offered are $3 Bloody Marys, Marias, Mimosas and screwdrivers every weekend 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

The restaurant also offers two large banquet rooms, one that holds 50 people and one that holds 100 people. Because of Covid-19 restrictions, banquet options are limited, and Glaspie asks anyone interested to call 734-475-9999 for more information.

Hours are Monday 3 p.m. – midnight, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. – midnight, Friday 11 a.m.  – to 1 a.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 1 a.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. – midnight.
