It’s been an unusual year to start a business, and for Laura Scriven, owner of downtown Chelsea’s Culture Creations, her first year of business has been particularly memorable.

“I am thankful for the warm reception I’ve received over the last year from Chelsea, the merchants and the people,” said Scriven. “It’s made a difficult first year much better.”

On Nov. 25, Culture Creations received an official welcome from the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce with a ribbon cutting held at the business, which is located at 105 S. Main Street.

Scriven says it’s an opportunity to remind people about all the store has to offer.

“For the Christmas holiday, I am featuring items from local craftsmen as well as from around the world,” said Scriven. “I have some amazing holiday merchandise this year that are either locally created or from Fair Trade sources, and it really feels like the holiday season in the store.”

Culture Creations offers unique items from artisans around the world, and up until the pandemic, Scriven had been an avid traveler, seeking out the items she sells.

“I travel to try to learn about customs, history, art, and artists and to bring back these works of art to the Chelsea people,” said Scriven.

“If you’re looking for something unique and unusual for yourself or as a gift, Culture Creations is the place. Due to the current situation, I can’t travel as I had planned but I am continuing my plan for responsible purchasing by ordering from Fair Trade companies as well as reordering from the contacts I have made in my trades,” she said.
