Chelsea High School’s Class of 2023 said farewell to Beach Middle School Tuesday, June 11 at a ceremony at Beach followed by a party in the cafeteria.

“It’s a pretty special group,” Principal Nick Angel said about the graduating eighth-graders. “The Class of 2023 has lots of strong personalities, opinions, and leaders.”

Angel shared what the students will miss most about middle school, a list that included knowing what classroom to go to in the building, the cool classes, and the Washington, D.C. trip, along with what they’d miss least about Beach – the cold cafeteria and the hot gymnasium.

Teacher Jessica DeLand was the honored educator selected by students. She told them, “You’ve given me and taught me a lot over the years you’ve been here. You taught me about fashion. You have your own sense of style. As you transition into high school, I urge you to think about what matters to you. What do you value? What do you want to be? Get your education but don’t forget from whence you came.”

Assistant Principal Matt Ceo told the graduating eighth-graders, “Getting through eighth grade is no easy task. Show gratitude as frequently as you can to as many people as you can. Let’s practice some gratitude and stand up and give a hand to all the people here who have got you where you are. You are freshman after tomorrow and we are going to miss you terribly.”

The eighth-grade class president and vice president then spoke beginning with the president, Benny Greenstein.

“The last few years have felt like the longest years of my life,” he said, and went on to highlight each year of middle school. “These three years have really changed us. Here we go. High School. What everyone is waiting for. We will finally get the independence we have been waiting for in our middle school years. No more being labeled as a kid. Now we’re teenagers in high school taking drivers ed., exams, experiencing life, and freedom.”

Eighth-grade vice president Elijah Ratliff took classmates on a “little trip down memory lane” that began with fifth-grade moving up day.

“We’re growing up, all of us, doing new and different things,” said Ratliff. “Now we’re ready for independence. We have changed. We are change.”

Angel concluded the ceremony with some tips from high school students on how to be successful at Chelsea High School including getting a good night’s sleep, budgeting time wisely, staying organized, and not riding the elevators or borrowing an elevator key from upperclassmen because there is no elevator key.”

And on a sobering note he reminded everybody, “ There is no recess in high school.”
