(Publisher’s note: There is a photo being circulated on Facebook asking folks to call the Chelsea Police Department if they recognize the man in it. This is not the suspect. This is, in fact, a Chelsea Police Officer responding to the scene this morning. The photo was not released by the Chelsea PD.)

Chelsea Police are looking for your help to solve a crime at the Chelsea Antique Mall that occurred sometime after 7 p.m. Sunday night, Aug. 18 or during the early morning hours of Monday, Aug. 19.

An intruder broke into the antique mall and stole about $3,000 worth of coins said Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth.

Ed Greenleaf, the owner of the mall, said the thief knew exactly what he was looking for and didn’t take items from any of the other 40 booths.

“He was only in here about a minute and a half, and from the video, we could hear him snap the cases open and dump the trays of coins out into a carrying bag of some sort and leave the building,” Greenleaf said.

The thief broke in from the north side through a glass door and Greenleaf said, “Someone saw an individual taking photos of that area of the building about a week ago. ”

Taken were Morgan silver dollars, an American Eagle silver dollar, large pennies dating from 1830-1850, Indian Head pennies dating from 1890-1909, Wheat pennies dating from 1910-1935, ‘V’ nickles dating from 1883-1920, Buffalo head nickels dating from 1921-1937, and silver dimes dating from 1894-1964

If you saw anything suspicious, please call the Chelsea Police Department at 475-9122, ext. 0 or the anonymous tipline at 475-9122, ext. 7.
