Community invited to reaffirm equal rights proclamation on Jan. 21

In honor of MLK Day, on Monday, Jan. 21, residents are invited to be part of a special reaffirmation of the Chelsea area position on equality and human rights during a ceremony at the Police Station building in the City Council chambers.

The council chambers will be open at 6:30 p.m. so residents who would like to sign the proclamation may do so before it is framed and presented to the Chelsea Council for display.

Local civic and community leaders are invited to say a few words and the proclamation will be officially read aloud during a ceremony that begins at 7 p.m.

“This is the 11th year that Chelsea has celebrated this national holiday,” said Joanne Ladio, who presented the idea to the Chelsea City Council last week.

Community groups are being offered the opportunity to state their support of the proclamation and to sponsor the event at no cost.  Their names will be on the evening program and in a “signing book” that will be available for citizen signatures.

This book, along with the framed proclamation, will be available at different community locations in the coming months to give all citizens the opportunity to sign and show their support of this document.

Check out the group’s Facebook page for evolving details of the event.
