Chelsea High School’s Connell Alford was chosen as the 2023 Detroit High School Boys Cross Country Athlete of the Year at an awards ceremony held in Detroit this week on the heels of two more amazing race performances last weekend.
“Connell certainly deserves this award,” said coach Eric Swager. “He completely dominated the Division 2 season, going undefeated and setting our school record by nearly 30 seconds, and earning All American Status at the Champs Sports XC Finals in San Diego.”
The Detroit High School Sports Awards is an athletic recognition program honoring the area’s top-performing athletes, coaches and teams.
The nine-month program, selecting and announcing nominees each season, culminates in an in-person awards show where winners are announced and special awards are given.
This program is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards.
