Cookies and brownies, cakes and pies, oh my.
Fudge and candy, doughnuts and bread.
Do you have a favorite recipe? Then spend Saturday baking it and enter your sweet treats at the 76th Annual Community Fair on Sunday, Aug. 18 from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
The judges will make their decisions on Monday, Aug. 19 when they’ll be tasting every entry.
Superintendent Sarah Heller-Norris says she’s has grown up helping in the baking department. “It seems like it’s been a life-long thing,” she said.
Heller-Norris and Beth Timmerman are the two baking superintendents.
During the years they’ve seen cake decorating increase in popularity.
“I think people are having more fun with crafting on cakes,” Heller-Norris said.
But, cookies, muffins, cakes and breads are also very popular with exhibitors.
“Pies, not as many,” Heller-Norris said. Or cupcakes. So these might be categories to enter because there might be less competition and a better chance to win a ribbon.
To give you an idea of the number of entries, Heller-Norris said last year, there were 43 entries in the 3-8 year old division; in 9-12 year old division, there were 69 entries.
In the 13-17 year old division, there were 53 entries and adults accounted for 143 entries.
In addition, baking entries were up in 2012 from previous years, she said.
Between 8-10 judges spend Monday tasting all the entries and consider not only taste, but also how the entry looks. In the case of bread, for instance, its cut in half to make sure it’s evenly baked. The judge look at the entry, then taste it, she said.
Heller-Norris says in her home, “We get a group together and bake. It’s a time when nieces and nephews, cousins and grandmother’s have an all day, baking day on Saturday.”
Exhibitors can see how they did on Tuesday, the official opening of the fair. For a complete list of all the events during the week, click here.
