Counting down to fair: 1891-1899 (with photos from last year)

Here’s the second installment of the past history of the Chelsea Community Fair, which takes place this year from Aug. 21-Aug. 25 and will celebrate its 75th anniversary.

1891: Second annual fair of Chelsea Union Agricultural Society opened Tuesday, October, 1891.

1892: Highlights of the fair were horse racing and a balloon ascension.

1893: Fourth annual fair of Chelsea Union Agricultural Society takes place on Oct. 11-13, 1893.

1894: Fair dates were Oct. 9-12. Highlights were horse races every day and a balloon ascension.

1895: Fair dates were Sept. 18-20. There was horse racing, a 1-mile bike race, a 2-mile bike race and a ball game between Chelsea and Dexter.

1896: Fair dates were Oct. 7-9. Receipts were used in the liquidation of mortgage and indebtedness on the grounds.

1897: No mention of a fair.

1898: No mention of a fair.

1899: Sale of fairgrounds and buildings on Saturday, July 1, 1899. George E. Davis auctioneer. Sale resulted in enough money to pay up mortgage.
