Teachers’ Day is on May 4, and more than a dozen merchants in downtown Chelsea are planning an activity to thank local teachers for their hard work during this particularly challenging school year.

Laura Scriven, owner of Culture Creations, is organizing the event at her store located at 105 S. Main St. She invites parents and kids to visit the store and sign a card for their teacher. There is the potential for 163 different cards representing every teacher in the district, all of which Scriven will donate.

“Once signatures and thank yous are collected, many of the local businesses will add a little gift card or coupon to show our appreciation for our amazing teachers in the Chelsea School District,” said Scriven. “This will continue throughout the rest of April, and cards will be delivered to the schools before Teachers’ Day.”

Scriven was inspired to celebrate Teachers’ Day by her experience of living in South Korea for many years, where Teachers’ Day is a big event.

“Being on the receiving end of Teachers’ Day really helped make me feel appreciated and valued,” she said. “Over the past year, there has been so much thrown at the teachers in this country and I feel that they have really risen to the challenges. It’s so hard being a teacher and now they are preparing two lessons (online and in person) and having to forge new programs, techniques, and learn new skills. I just want to say thank you.”

Scriven can be reached at 734-780-0779 or at [email protected]. Culture Creations is currently open on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays 12-5 p.m., on Fridays 2-6 p.m., and on Saturdays 12-6 p.m.
