When the Dexter Township Board meets on Wednesday, Dec. 19, there will be a new face at the table.

Following a recount Monday, Dec. 10, candidate Bill Gajewski will be Trustee Bill Gajewski.

With a one vote difference between three candidates in the November Dexter Township trustee race, Gajewski filed for an official recount and when the Board of Canvassers performed the task, it ended in his favor.

The original election results showed Mike Howard received 1,622 votes, Anne Sullivan Buchholz received 1,631 votes and Gajewski finished with 1,630 votes.

Ed Golembiewski, chief deputy clerk said Tuesday morning that following the recount, Sullivan Buchholz lost seven votes, Howard lost 3 votes and Gajewski lost one vote, but the swing as enough put Gejewski into office and remove Sullivan Buchholz from office.

Township Supervisor Pat Kelly said Sullivan Buchholz attended two board meetings and was either part of a unanimous vote or voted in the minority.

This means that her votes would not have made a difference in the outcome of any issue she voted on.

Township Clerk Harley Rider said via email that this was the first time in the 27 elections that he has managed that the count was that close, and that it was the first time in his 20 years in Dexter Township government that a township position has changed as the result of a recount.
