Don’t Fall for Fraud

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Chelsea State Bank for the information in this story.)

With the threat of cyber crime on the rise, we at Chelsea State Bank want you to be aware of the current trends in fraud happening right here in our very own community.

Already this year, we have helped customers deal with several different fraud scams.  Specifically, grandparent scams and tech support scams.

Grandparent Scams

In grandparent scams, scammers pose as panicked grandchildren in trouble, calling or sending messages urging grandparent to wire money immediately.  What should you do if this happens to you?

  • Resist the urge to act immediately
  • Verify the caller’s identity and location
  • Don’t send cash, gift cards, or money transfers
  • Check with another family member

Tech Support Scams

Tech support scammers want you to believe you have a serious problem with your computer, like a virus. They want you to pay for tech support services you don’t need, to fix a problem that doesn’t exist.

They often ask you to pay by wiring money, putting money on a gift card, prepaid card or cash reload card, or using a money transfer app because they know those types of payments can be hard to track and reverse.
