Remember the Titans?
The Bulldogs would probably rather forget.
Chelsea football team opened its 2012 season with an error-riddled 34-27 loss to Lumen Christi Friday, giving up 362 rushing yards and racking up a dozen penalties.
Chelsea scored first on a 43-yard Zack Rabbitt field goal, but the visiting Titans tacked on two touchdowns in short order and held the Bulldogs at bay the rest of the game.
“I thought Lumen Christi was more disciplined; I thought they outplayed us,” said Chelsea coach Brad Bush.
Lumen Christi running backs Amani Bass and Isaiah Bleiler combined for 245 yards, and receiver Nick Girodat added another 70 as the Titans executed a running attack that spread the ball around just enough to keep the Bulldog defense off-balance.
Chelsea, meanwhile, gave the Lumen Christi defense all it could handle in the second half. Senior tailback Berkley Edwards rushed for 95 of his 134 yards and caught three passes for another 36. The Bulldogs lost tight end Luke Hollandsworth to a broken collarbone in the first half, but quarterback Logan Brown connected with wide receiver Kyle Koseck and halfback Colton Platt for 23 and 31 yards, respectively.
“They’re a great football team,” said Lumen Christ coach Herb Brogan, whose offensive coordinator told him six months ago that they’d need to score 35 points to beat the Bulldogs. “Their quarterback threw the ball real well; they’re a very skilled football team. We were thrilled to be able to move the ball on them as well as we did.”
But every time the Bulldogs seemed to be laying the groundwork for a rally, they’d find a way to let the air out of it.
After cutting Lumen Christi’s lead to 14-10, Chelsea started the second half with the ball – and turned it over on a fumbled snap just three plays into the half. Lumen Christi marched it 32 yards in eight plays for a touchdown.
When a holding penalty turned first-and-goal at the Lumen Christi 7-yard line into first-and-goal at the Titans’ 19, Chelsea didn’t flinch. Edwards plowed up the middle for seven yards and Brown, flushed out of the pocket and on the run, fired a perfect strike to Koseck at the goal line for the touchdown, cutting Lumen Christi’s lead to 27-24.
The margin lasted for 39 seconds. Three consecutive first-downs later the Titans had made it a 10-point game again.
“This isn’t our best defensive team; it’s not their best defensive team. We’re about where I thought we would be,” Bush said. “I think if we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot, we win the game.”
