Gallery 100 is hosting a unique quilt exhibit handmade by local artists who are members of the Chelsea, Ann Arbor, Dexter, and Ypsilanti (C.A.D.D.Y.) Corner Quilters.
The quilts on display are representative of the quilts in the C.A.D.D.Y. Corner.
Quilters donate to local organizations. Since 2008 these talented quilters have given away over 800 beautiful pieces of work. Most quilts are given to the University of Michigan’s Bone Marrow Transplant Unit patients. Last year the St. Louis Center, Faith in Action, Jewish Family Services, and the University of Michigan’s Office of Decedent Affairs also received quilts for their programs.
C.A.D.D.Y. collaborated with the Chelsea District Library for a community quilt project. The completed quilt can be viewed in the library’s stairway.
As you view the show at Silver Maples, you’ll notice no identification tags indicating who made a quilt, as most are a collaborative effort. The fabric is mainly from donations, often supplemented by the quilter’s stashes. Each quilt has a label on the back corner that reads: Made Especially for You by the C.A.D.D.Y. Corner Quilters. The quilts are not for sale because each one has been made to be donated.
The C.A.D.D.Y. Corner Quilters began more than 20 years ago. They met weekly in members’ homes, and as the group evolved, they changed their focus to making quilts to donate to charity. They have a quilting space at the Chelsea Senior Center so that others can join their weekly gatherings. Established in 2009, Gallery 100 is a quaint space nestled in the warm community of Silver Maples, alongside their large event space, the Maples Room. Gallery 100 hosts related events and programming that encourage the exploration and appreciation of all aspects of art. In addition, the gallery creates opportunities for residents, artists, and the community to come together to enjoy art and develop meaningful relationships.
“Gallery 100 is built on curiosity and continuous learning, deepening public understanding, community collaboration and diversity. It offers a space for artists to grow in their exposure, while providing a public space for viewing and appreciating art for all ages,” said Gallery Program Director Winn Nichols.
You may see the array of stunning quilts at Gallery 100 from the hours of 10 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday and 10 am-3 pm Saturday and Sunday. Everyone is invited.
The exhibit runs through June 23.
