The Chelsea Girls Track and Field Team won the revival of the Chelsea Relays on Friday, April 19, and with that victory, the team’s record now stands at 26-0.
The Chelsea relays took place for 30 years, with girls only, but stopped in 2003. This year, it was run again with both boys and girls.
The temperature was in the high 30’s and low 40’s, and it was snowing for about half of the meet, said Shane Rodriguez, head track coach.
“The Chelsea girl’s team performed very well and placed high in many events,” he said.
Rodriguez chose to highlight the performances of the freshmen on the team.
“All season, they have been stepping up and improving,” he said. “However, in this meet, we wouldn’t have won without them.”
- Katherine Moise led the 2nd place relay in the pole vault.
- Taylor Shrock stepped into the 4×3200 and helped relay win the gold.
- Teddi Reynolds is one of the fastest freshmen around and won double gold in the 4×200 and freshman/sophomore 4×100.
- Amanda Simich is just as fast as Reynolds, the coach said, and was also a double gold medal winner in the sprint medley and varsity 4×100.
“These are just a few of the super talented group of 24 freshmen the team carries this year,” Rodriguez said.
The coach also wanted to thank “the tireless work of the coaching staff; their passion and caring for the sport made the day possible.
They are Eric Swager, Steve Forsberg, Loren Thorburn, Kari Goorehouse, Mike Holik, Bert Kruse, and Pat Clarke.”
Clarke also served as clerk for the meet, and “a great deal of gratitude is sent his way,” the coach said.
He said there were more than 30 helpers and workers at the meet who braved the cold, “and I thank them.”
Not to be forgotten are Administrators Jeremy Barkey, Mike Kapolka, and Jason Morris for all of their support, he said.
