Hip, hip hooray for frozen Chelsea Kiwanis Club hotdogs

Chelsea Kiwanis Club hotdogs found in my freezer from last year’s Sounds & Sights Festival.

With the Chelsea Kiwanis Club following state-wide guidelines for gatherings and meetings, the club’s usual Saturday story hasn’t been running.

Well, I thought readers might appreciate another type of Kiwanis story for your Saturday reading smile.

I was searching for something else in my freezer Sunday and came across a freezer bag of three Kiwanis hotdogs still wrapped in paper nestled in their buns According to the date on the freezer bag, I’d bought them at the Sounds and Sights Festival last July.

Then, for some reason, after I bought them, I brought them home. And froze them. Why I purchased three extra dogs – other than I LOVE the Kiwanis hotdogs? No clue.

I’m not a knockwurst person like so many people.

Kiwanis hotdogs are my favorites — well done, please.So once I spied them in my freezer, I had to have one.

NOW.

But, how to defrost and heat it up the fastest?

No, I didn’t google it. That would have been too easy. And take too much time.

Nope, after considering defrosting it in the microwave first, then putting it under the broiler – bun and all – I skipped the first stage and popped it right under the broiler.

I really wanted that hot dog ASAP.

Well, let’s just say, my plan was 50-percent successful.

Good thing I’m not a big fan of bread – because although the hotdog survived the broiler, the bun did not.

In addition to it being thoroughly scorched on top, which I could have dealt with, broiling it turned the bun into a rock-hard lump.  

So, the bread got composted, but the hot dog, oh that aromatic little meal. It tasted so good. Like it had just been served to me with a big smile from a Kiwanian.

And when I closed my eyes, to really take in the aroma and flavor, I could almost feel myself being transported to Middle Street and then to the fairgrounds, sitting at a picnic table, eating one of these just off the grill.

Since I still have two left, if anyone has a fool-proof plan to save both the bun and the dog, I am open to any and all ideas. (I trust this community’s ideas more than Google’s.)

So, for now, I’m saving them and waiting for a day when I need another reminder of summer fun.

  1. I can’t help with defrosting. You made me think about having one of their knockwurst on a bun. My mouth began to water. I’m looking forward to when I can go to the Kiwanis wagon to get one, no kraut, just mustard! Yummy!

  2. What a great story to share I was almost there. Looking forward to being together again at the Chelsea Fair and having 1 of these hot dogs every time I go. Love our little town and miss it. Stay healthy , stay in so we can see each other again.

  3. Toast the bread separately (thawed first or frozen)
    Heat the dog in boiling water, microwave (puncture the skin first) or broil in oven.
    Put together with your favorite toppings and enjoy!
