Hometown Holiday: make a pinecone birdseed feeder

When you’re out and about Saturday, Dec. 1 during Hometown Holiday, be sure to stop by GiGi’s Flowers and Gifts at 103 N. Main St. and make a free pinecone birdseed ornament from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Last year, GiGi Batsakis said about 40 kids stopped by to make the ornament.

Back by popular demand, it’s something that Batsakis has offered to the community for about 15 years.

“Kids come in, they slather a pine cone with peanut butter, roll it in birdseed, it makes a mess, and we give them a paper bag to take it home,” she said.

The project is for all ages – kids and “kids at heart,” and the pinecone is ready for hanging outside a window or on a tree branch for birds to enjoy.

The idea started with a former employee in the Main Street flower shop. “One of the gals used to work in daycare and she said, ‘GiGi, the kids just love this.’”

A mini birdfeeder with its own carrying case? How can you resist this fun project?
