MLK’s Birthday is just over a month away, and the Chelsea Human Rights Commission (HRC) talked about plans for observations of the January 20, 2025 Federal holiday at its Dec. 4 meeting.
HRC has a work group that has come up with ideas to observe the day including a program in conjunction with the Flint Freedom Schools. These schools work with youth in Flint and have their origins in the Freedom Schools during the Civil Rights era.
Staff from the Flint program will lead Chelsea residents in the energetic opening activity they use called Harambe, share a Read Aloud program, and work on crafts. This will be a time to recall the work of Dr. King and learn about the history of the Freedom Schools.
The program will occur in the afternoon on Jan 18, 2025 with location, exact time and more details to be determined. Other community groups are still confirming their plans for the holiday. The HRC will collect all activities together in a poster for publicity.
At the December meeting, HRC members also discussed the need to prepare an annual report for Chelsea City Council as well as a plan for 2025.
