Human Rights Commission needs to fill vacancy

By Lisa Carolin

Lori Shaperio resigned from the Chelsea Human Rights Commission earlier this month due to family commitments.

Help is needed to bring the recently completed community survey results to the City Council and the greater community.

According to HRC Chairman Lynn Fox, “The HRC reports directly to the City Council; we are not autonomous and cannot address whether specific instances of discrimination have occurred. We make periodic reports and recommendations to the City Council on ways to improve city government programs and ordinances designed to eliminate discrimination or remove the effects of past discrimination.”

She said, “The HRC researches and formulates programs of community education with the objective of discouraging and eliminating prejudice or discrimination. Lastly, we can communicate with Federal and State agencies regarding their human rights and affirmative action programs for the purpose of making recommendations to City Council on more effective coordination of federal, state and city programs.”

Applications for Board, Commissions, and Committees can be found at the City of Chelsea website city-chelsea.org and you must be a Chelsea resident.

Please forward completed applications along with an updated resume to the City Clerk via email ([email protected]), drop off at the City Offices during regular business hours, or send to the attention of the City Clerk by U.S. Mail.

Applicants should review the City Board, Committee and Commission Handbook and the Human Rights Ordinance for additional information.
