Human Rights Commission planning survey presentation

By Lisa Carolin

Among the topics at the Chelsea Human Rights Commission’s April 3 meeting was an anonymous citizen inquiry to HRC President Susan Morrel-Samuels asking if race is always provided when a suspect in a crime is described.

The citizen was not requesting any action, and Morrel-Samuels wanted know if there is a role in this matter for the HRC.

City Council and HRC liaison Cheri Albertson offered to raise the question to Chelsea Police Chief Ed Toth at an upcoming City Council meeting.

HRC members agreed to hold a work session on Wednesday, April 10, at 6:30 p.m. to continue survey presentation planning.

Chelsea City Council approved the HRC’s work plan last month. At the April 3 meeting, HRC members discussed how to implement the plan, which includes scheduling and publicizing a public meeting and researching issues identified in the survey.

There is still one vacancy on the HRC, and information can be found at http://city-chelsea.org.

The HRC meets the first Wednesday of the month at 6 p.m. in City Council Chambers. The next meeting is May 1.
