John Beeman, co-chairman of the American Legion Post 31’s 42nd Annual Winter Carnival, said this year’s edition was the best carnivals in the last five years.

There were 56 euchre players and about 90 fishermen participating in the annual fishing derby and the weather was perfect for the February event which took place Feb. 7-9.

“Every kid under 12 got a flag and a fishing pole,” said Don Bell, co-chairman of the event, which is run by the Sons of the American Legion.

Larry Doll, chairman of the 23rd Annual Cavanaugh Lake Chili Cook Off, said chili tasters were plentiful and everyone had a good time.

The carnival’s newest event – the Kids’ 25-Cent Carnival – was a huge success.

Tom and Angie Smith, chairman of the carnival were thrilled with the turn-out for the new Sunday event geared toward children 12 years and younger.

In fact, more than 70 kids climbed the stairs to the second floor to participate in everything from a Cake Walk with Jiffy mix as the prize, to a fishing pond. And all of them walked away with a bag full of goodies, an American flag and all kinds of candy and prizes.

There was a distinct fish theme for the new event with beautiful hand-painted fish graphics created by Tim Eiseman. He said he painted three major acrylic pieces that were used for games and all the signs.
