The Intergenerational Garden needs volunteers of all ages to help maintain its vegetable and flower garden located on the Chelsea Senior Center campus.

Even just a half-hour a week makes a difference.

You don’t have to be a gardener to help

We need lots of help growing healthy plants, but there is so much more that goes into a vibrant community garden.

Here’s a list of the help needed:

  • Weeding, watering, and harvesting: Enjoy great exercise in the fresh air. You decide when and how long. We’ll provide plenty of guidance if you’re new to gardening.
Experienced organic gardeners: We really need some knowledgeable gardeners to trouble-shoot plant problems and share your knowledge of how to make the garden more productive and beautiful.
  • Fixers and builders to repair rabbit fences, erect trellises, and build raised planters.
  • Communicators: Create email updates, signs, flyers and social media posts.
Kid-helpers: Lead or help with youth programming related to gardening and healthy eating.
You don’t have to be a senior to help, either.

The Intergenerational Garden is a place for people of all ages to learn about gardening, support senior nutrition, and enjoy each other’s company. While seniors are the backbone of garden volunteering, we also welcome youth groups and families with children. This is a great opportunity for youth group service projects or for high-schoolers seeking experience for their resumes and college applications.

To stay safe this summer we will comply with the Chelsea Senior Center’s safety guidelines, including wearing masks and staying a hoe’s length away from fellow volunteers.

About the Intergenerational Garden:

The garden was established in 2012 as a collaborative effort of the Chelsea Senior Center and the Chelsea School District.

Its mission is to:

  • Teach children the joys and benefits of gardening,
  • Make gardening experiences available for seniors, and
  • Provide space and activities for multiple generations to enjoy each other’s company.

Produce from the garden is incorporated into the CSC’s senior nutrition program, cooking classes, and a donation-based farm stand for seniors.

To volunteer, call the CSC Main Office at (734) 475-9242, or email [email protected].

The Chelsea Senior Center is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit located in the Washington Street Education Center at 512 Washington St. with office hours Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our mission is to enhance the quality of life and well-being for area seniors and their families.
