Last Monday, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club welcomed Gretchen Steele, president of the Chelsea Athletic Boosters.

She informed us that Chelsea High School has 26 varsity sports for students to join, which is more than most school districts, especially considering Chelsea’s student count is not as large as many other districts.

Her group of parent volunteers in the boosters does a tremendous job of filling over 800 assignments during the school year including working the gates of events and concessions.

She reminded us that the school budget is very limited  these days, leaving the boosters responsible for much of the expense needed for the teams, (eg. uniforms and other equipment).

The boosters also support middle school athletes. They make it possible for a very high percentage of students to be able to participate in sports. Many students are able to play a few different sports during the year, and with flexible scheduling, they may also participate in band, orchestra, choir, or other activities as well.

Coming up this year for the boosters will be a dog show to be held on the football field that is expected to bring many enthusiasts to Chelsea.

Also, a national ballet company will be coming to work with Chelsea children interested in dance.

On Monday, the speaker will be Chelsea High School Band Director Rick Catherman. He will be joined by Susie Catherman from the Chelsea Band Boosters, and Katy Steklac, his colleague from Beach Middle School. We are looking forward to hearing how music instruction improves the student’s minds and enriches their lives.

Chelsea Kiwanis meets each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to enjoy our speakers and learn about Kiwanis.
