Students and faculty from the Chelsea Center for the Arts will present a weekend of jazz for all ages on Jan. 11-12.

It begins with “Jazz and Chocolates” at Silver Maples – an evening of American Jazz, Blues, and Standards, on Friday, Jan. 11 from 6-8:30 p.m.

The music will take place in the Maple Room of Silver Maples of Chelsea at 100 Silver Maples Dr.

Jazz and Chocolates is a fundraiser for CCA’s Student Scholarship and Tuition Assistance Fund, which provides annually thousands of dollars to students seeking lessons and classes in music and visual arts.

This year’s event will showcase beginning to advanced music students, along with their CCA instructors.

“We’re really looking forward to sharing this evening with the community,” said Lisa Hinz-Johnson, CCA’s director of music programming in a press release.

“It’s an important way for students to connect their music with an appreciative audience, and we have always had a warm welcome from everybody at Silver Maples,” she said.

The evening includes a variety of music, delicious desserts and sweet treats, and music-themed raffled items.

“I think that what makes this evening so special is the wide array of musicians, performing together,” she said, adding, “You’ll see musicians as young as 9 years old, performing for the first time alongside their instructors, and then we have adult musicians who have been doing this for years.”

The CCA Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ben Jansson and Alex Anest, will also be on hand to perform jazz classics from Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, and John Coltrane. CCA alum and vocalist Charlotte Prenevost will take the stage with a handful of jazz standards.

Tickets will be available at the door for $10 per person or $25 per family.  Proceeds go to benefit the CCA Student Scholarship and Tuition Assistance Program, which has distributed over $30,000 over the past four years to students in need.

The second portion of the weekend is a free event for children on Saturday, Jan. 12, from 10-10:45 a.m., at Chelsea Center for the Arts, 400 Congdon Street.

Jazz Jam Jr., directed by CCA instructor Tara Vesprini, is a lively jazz and improvisation workshop for children, ages 3-6.

This popular workshop gives very young a children a first taste of jazz through body rhythms, movement and creating improvisational riffs together.

Although the workshop is free, families must first register their children by calling 433-2787.  Space is limited to first 12 registered students.
