Soon to be Chelsea High School senior Joel Basar, 17, was recently awarded a Michigan 4-H State Award in Science, Engineering, Technology and Math in the senior division.

The award is the highest honor 4-H members can earn.

Basar was honored at a ceremony on June 20, which was held at the Huntington Club at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing.

To be considered a delegate to the state awards, Basar had to submit an application with a resume and his 4-H story. After being selected to be a delegate, he attended Exploration Days where he was interviewed by a panel that selected the State Award winner, which was announced at the ceremony.

State Awards recognize 4-H members for engaging in rich learning experiences that lead to important life skill development.

In his application, Basar had to describe what he learned in his 4-H project and how he learned it, how he applied the content knowledge he learned, how he plans to use that knowledge, as well as identifying up to three 4-H leadership experiences he’s had and their significance to his growth and development.
