Jump Rope for Heart: North Creek fundraises for school, American Heart Association

What better way than on Valentine’s Day to learn about North Creek Elementary School’s Jump Rope For Heart fundraiser?

The almost 500 students in the elementary school will participate in the fundraiser from Feb 25 – March 1 for both the American Heart Association and the school during gym class.

But before then, the students will collect donations for their jumping efforts as they exercise to become Heart Heroes.

Eric Burris, a physical education teacher at both North Creek and Beach Middle School, said this is North Creek’s 15th year of participation in the Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.

And, in addition, “We will have discussions about the brain, heart and lungs and what can be done to keep them healthy for a lifetime.”

But before the big week, the students will practice their jump roping skills while collecting donations.

“This is a great opportunity for students to help fight heart disease and stroke, and contribute to the community,” he said, as “They will work on becoming a Heart Hero.”

Students will have collection envelopes but Burris asks they don’t go door-to-door, rather that they ask friends, neighbors and relatives.

Last year, North Creek raised $2,721, and if the students raise more than $1,500, the school gets a US Games certificate that is used to add new equipment or update older equipment at the school.

For more information on heart disease and stroke, check out the American Heart Association website.

Burris said anyone can also donate online, or for those who might want to donate to this wonderful cause, you can drop off donations at the school and one of the friendly people in the office will assist you.

Donations of any amount will be accepted through March 1.

Last year, donations down a bit, so Burris is hoping that this year people will open their hearts to this worthy cause.

The students will jump, jump, jump during their gym classes, beginning Feb. 25 through March 1.
