June 20: Michaelene Pawlak to speak to Chelsea Kiwanis

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Bob Milbrodt for the information in this story.)

On Monday, June 13, the Chelsea Kiwanis Club heard from Aubrey Shemwell, outgoing president of Chelsea’s Parent Teacher Organization, and Melissa Matthews-Allen, the incoming leader. They are excited about the upcoming school year and have plans for many activities for the elementary students and their parents.

For the last 8 years, Shemwell has built a thriving and well organized group.  She instituted a grant program that teachers can use to apply for activities and supplies that are not in the school budget. It has successfully given out thousands of dollars to enhance learning for our youth.

We plan to work together on Punt, Pass and Kick this fall, as well as the Bulldog Jog and the Ice Cream Social next spring.

This Monday, the club will hear from Michaelene Pawlak of Western Washtenaw Area Value Express. She will give an update on the latest transportation issues in our area. Kiwanis has been supporting WAVE since it started as Chelsea Area Transportation Service, (CATS Bus), and had one bus. They now have several vehicles and numerous services, including a free shuttle loop around town and connections to Ann Arbor Transportation to get folks around the whole county.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy-Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m.

Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis. Go to www.kiwanisclubofchelsea.org for more information.
