June 21: Help celebrate the Chelsea Rotary Club turning 30

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Lori Coryell for the information in this story.)

Calling All Chelsea Rotary Alumni.

Join us as we recognize 30 years of “Service Above Self” in the Chelsea community and beyond. That’s right, the Chelsea Rotary Club turns 30 this year, and we want all Rotarians past and present to join us in the celebration.

The celebration is set for Thursday, June 21 at 6 p.m. at the Chelsea Depot.

The evening honors all past and present Rotarians and will highlight the role of women in creating and sustaining our outstanding Club.  It’s a terrific opportunity for former Rotarians to connect with the club and share stories and memories from 30 years of service to the community.

The keynote speaker is Virginia B. Nordby – a true trailblazer throughout an illustrious and distinguished career. A native of California with a law degree from Stanford, she has steadfastly and passionately advocated for the rights of the disenfranchised.

She relocated to Michigan to join the University of Michigan as a faculty member and administrator. Here she worked tirelessly to end discrimination against people of all colors, genders, sexual orientation, and social classes.

Awards and honors received include the Harriet Myer Memorial Service Award of the Michigan Association of Women Deans, Administrators, and Counselors and the University of Michigan’s International Women’s Year Award. In 1991, she was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame.

In Rotary International, Nordby was the first woman in the world to be nominated and serve as a District Governor. She has been active on several Rotary International committees.

Most notably, she has served for over seven years on the committee to develop and implement peace and conflict resolution in Rotary International Centers and on the Rotary International Finance Committee.

She has chaired both the Women in Rotary Committee and a multi-district President-Elect Training Seminar. In recognition of her contributions, Nordby received the Rotary Board of Directors’ Service Above Self Award and the Rotary Foundation’s Distinguished Service Award.

We are proud to welcome such a distinguished Rotarian to the Chelsea Rotary Club.

If you’ve ever been a member of the Chelsea Rotary Club, you don’t want to miss this event.
