As downtown Chelsea store La Maison approaches its fifth anniversary later this year, owner Dana McGrath has been working to sharpen her business skills.

She recently completed participating in the 10,000 Small Businesses Program, which focuses on practical business skills that small business owners can apply to marketing and employee management. McGrath received one-on-one business advising from business organizations and professional service firms along with a chance to learn from like-minded business owners.

“This couldn’t have come at a better time for me as I will soon be entering my sixth year of business,” said McGrath. “In the beginning, it was all about just surviving the first year or two. Now that I have a better grasp of my business and where I want to go with it, I can apply what I learn from this program and apply it to my business.”

McGrath is excited to now have a growth plan that will help her take her business to the next level.

“I was pretty excited to sit down with my tax accountant and review my balance sheet, profit and loss statements because I finally have a better understanding of what it all means,” she said.

McGrath has a Bachelor’s Degree in interior design and 20 years of experience in the home furnishing business including sales, merchandising, and buying. She previously worked as a designer and buyer at Merkel’s Furniture store for 10 years.

She opened La Maison in November of 2014, and has seen the business grow.

“We are continually evolving to better provide for our customer needs,” she said. “Not only can you find unique gift items such as Cherry Republic Chocolate Covered Cherries, but we now have upholstery and window treatments. We currently have lots of florals and home decor that you can easily style into your home for the spring season.”

McGrath is thrilled to have seen new businesses open on the north end of town since La Maison opened.

“There is such a nice variety of merchants all through downtown which provides more foot traffic for all of us,” she said. “I have always loved this space. All of the natural light coming through the front windows adds to our overall ambience, and it really makes us feel so connected to the downtown because we can see it all so easily.”

La Maison is a local resource for interior decor and design and welcomes projects ranging from color consultations and window treatments to managing an entire room renovation.

“We believe that home is your sanctuary, and it should be a direct reflection of who you are and not of the designer,” said McGrath. “We are here to help you pull it all together for a cohesive look and feel.
