Lambs perish in barn fire in Waterloo Township

Five area fire departments, including the Chelsea Area Fire Authority, were called to a barn fire on Hadley Road near Loveland in Waterloo Township Thursday afternoon.

And at the same time, Chelsea Area Firefighters were also called to a critical vehicle accident in Sylvan Township.

Chelsea Area Fire Chief Jim Payeur said that the fire call came in at 1:50 p.m. and when firefighters arrived on the scene a 2-story barn was fully engulfed.

He said that 14-16 lambs died in the fire.

About 30 firefighters from Stockbridge, Dexter, Scio, Unadilla and Manchester fought the fire that destroyed the barn and melted some siding on the nearby home.

Firefighters were on the scene for several hours.

Payeur said there was no estimate on damages and the cause was still under investigation.
