Letter to the Editor from the First Congregational Church of Chelsea

Dear City of Chelsea officials, employees and the Downtown Development Authority:

The members of First Congregational Church of Chelsea (UCC) extend sincere thanks to everyone who helped with the Jackson Street project.

Our church members are very pleased with the public parking lot adjacent to our property with handicap access to the church. This makes some very convenient spots for many people on Sundays, in addition to special occasions like weddings and funerals.

We thank the City for building the ramp that leads to the church’s basement entry. Without this permanent solution, it has been difficult to invite folks with physical challenges to our dinners and celebrations. It was also helpful that the City worked with us to design the sidewalk leading up to our bell tower entrance.

Helping with our drainage issues and coordinating infrastructure was essential. The re-build of our west-side entrance was done nicely, with a handicap accessible curb cut for access. We so appreciate the removal of electrical poles and added underground wiring. Working with us in a “give and take” manner to achieve the easement width created a smoothly-curved alley with much
visual improvement.

The landscaping done by City crews was extensive and beautiful, including trees, shrubs and grass. It all looks very fresh and gives our west side yard a face-lift long overdue.

In all, the church building itself has been enhanced by the design and implementation of your work.

Our views from the offices and classrooms to the railroad and clock tower are 100 percent improved. We won’t miss the weeds, wires and decrepit building formerly to our rear.

Our special thanks go to the DDA for their commitment to the project from the beginning to the end. It all makes for a more beautiful town to view, stroll through and enjoy.

Please come and visit the inside as well as the outside of First Congregational. All are welcome.

Sincere thanks,
Members and friends of First Congregational UCC of Chelsea
Arly Spink, Clerk
