Letter to the Editor: Giving Thanks to the St. Joe’s Chelsea Healthcare Workers

Dear Editor:

This week of Thanksgiving certainly seems like an appropriate time to offer a public thank you to all the healthcare workers at our St. Joe’s Chelsea Hospital.

I have lived in the Chelsea Community for over 40 years and worked 16 of those years as a nurse at the hospital. I’ve also spent the last 4 years as a member of the hospital’s Patient Experience Advisory Council (PEAC).

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, our PEAC members have contributed in a variety of ways to lend support and encouragement to our front-line workers caring for Covid patients. Many in our community have taken the time to write letters, kids have drawn heart-felt pictures, many sent food, pizza, flowers, gift cards, etc. All this as a way of saying thank you for what you do each day.

After 20 months, it appears that we are now in our 4th Covid surge and cases continue to trend in the wrong direction. The majority of Covid patients are now the unvaccinated. Some of them will die and leave heartbroken family members and friends. Our nurses, doctors, food service workers, housekeeping and support staff continue to show up and care for their patients. Day after day after day.

While I’m sure the gifts and cards are appreciated, what would likely be most appreciated is if our community came together as one and each of us recognize that we have a shared responsibility for the health and well being of all members. Losing one of our community is one too many.  And we have already lost more than one.

There is a lot of information, misinformation and disinformation about the Covid-19 virus and the vaccine out there. If you are not vaccinated yet, please take the time to talk with your trusted doctor or pharmacist about getting vaccinated. We are all tired of wearing masks and curtailing our social activities. But Covid-19 doesn’t care about that and is still very much with us.

Please do your part and get vaccinated and wear a mask. It’s really that simple.

Sincerely,

Judy Oake
Chelsea
