Letter to the Editor in favor of the May 7 operating, Headlee override school millage renewal

To the Editor:

The Board of Directors of the Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce (CACC) has unanimously voted to support the Chelsea School District Operating and Headlee Override Millage Renewal proposal.  The ballot proposal will be on the May 7, 2013 ballot. The CACC encourages everyone to go to the polls that day and to vote Yes for the Chelsea School District Operating and Headlee Override Millage Renewal proposal.

Renewal of this millage will maintain critical operating funds for the school district. It should be noted that this is not an increase in tax rate to our business community rather a renewal of the millage first supported by the voters in 1994.

The revenue generated from this millage represents approximately 14% of the operating budget for the school district. The loss of these funds will have an adverse effect on class size, programs and quality of the education of our youth.

School funding isn’t just an education issue – it’s a community issue, an economic growth issue and a values issue.  Strong schools attract jobs.  Businesses desire to locate where there are excellent school systems.  If we have a strong public school system, businesses will remain here or locate here because we will have a highly-qualified work force.

The CACC encourages you to vote Yes for the Chelsea School District Operating and Headlee Override Millage Renewal on May 7, 2013.

Sincerely,

Bruce Szcodronski

President

Chelsea Area Chamber of Commerce

  1. The point that this is a renewal, not a new millage, is vitally important to convey. These funds are an integral part of our childrens’, schools’, and communities’ best interest.
