The residents of the Chelsea School District will be asked to renew a Headlee Override Operating millage on May 7, which was originally approved on June 13, 1994.
This millage renewal applies only to industrial, commercial and non-owner occupied homes. The renewal will have no effect on our primary residence or homestead. As a matter of fact, it will only renew the 18 mills that are currently being collected from non-homestead properties.
The renewal vote is necessary to assure that the district will continue to receive the maximum provided by the State School Aid Fund. As the ballot on June 13, 1994 stated, “The millage will allow the school district to levy not more than the statuary rate of 18 mills against non-homestead property required for the school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation guarantee.”
This vote is very important to the school district since it represents $3.5 million or approximately 14 percent of the annual budget.
I was extremely pleased to read in the “Chelsea Standard” that the Board of Education had voted to refinance the current Bond Issues to receive a significant reduction in the interest rate and thus save taxpayers thousands of dollars over the life of the issue.
Chelsea has always taken care of Chelsea and I urge everyone to remember to vote on May 7 and to vote “YES” to continue the support of our fine school district.

Let’s see if I got this right. The tax will not apply to those that live in the area and send their kids to the schools. It will apply to non-homestead properties that comprise the many seasonal homes on lakes in the areas. We “summer residents” get few services for our tax dollars and don’t utilize the schools at all.
My seasonal home taxes are almost as much as I pay for a higher value main residence where I get good services.
“Fair share” should be paid by those who use the schools.
