Letter to the Editor: What Does $45,000 In Chelsea Taxpayer Money Buy?

In July 2021, the Chelsea City Council and the mayor voted to spend $10,000 of your money to investigate the Chelsea Police Department.

Why? They wanted to punish the police for doing their job—issuing citations to those obstructing traffic and protesting without a legally required permit. And, as an added bonus, they wanted to appease the Chelsea One World One Family outfit and its Black Lives Matter allies.

Ironically, the city council and mayor said they supported so-called “social justice” by showing contempt for our law enforcement.

Not good for our community.

Not good for our businesses.

Not good for our families.

This costly, baseless investigation showed zero violations of any kind by our police.

So what did our elected representatives do in response? They voted to hire a different company to conduct another investigation of Chelsea Police Department’s policies and procedures—this time costing $35,000

Instead of harassing our police and wasting taxpayer money, our representatives could have used that money and effort improving the lives of city residents—cleaning up/repairing our roads, removing trees that are dangerously close to power lines, and demolishing the long-vacant Federal Screw Works Building.

That they were not acting in our best interests is an understatement.

How do I know?

I asked you, Chelsea residents.

My supporters and I have been knocking on doors for the last few months, asking residents what they want from their elected officials.

They talked about infrastructure and city services.

They talked about unity.

They were very upset about the divisiveness that has crept into our wonderful city.

Notably, they did not talk about “social justice,” and not a single person said he or she wanted more police investigations, but that’s where we’re at.

Which brings me to the election this November. It’s decision time again and vital to the future of our city. Dave Keiser, Cheri Albertson and I are asking for your vote. To learn about me and where we stand on the issues, check out https://www.facebook.com/VotePhilandDave4ChelseaCityCounci.

It’s time to get #Back To Business and that means a thriving community, transparency in government, and safety for our families.

Thank you,

Phil Sawicki
Council Candidate
