Lima Township resident Vince Spade told the Washtenaw County Road Commission Board Tuesday, Dec. 18, that he was concerned about the condition of two culverts near North Creek Elementary School.
He said one culvert is south of the school and squarely within the Chelsea City limits; the other culvert is north of the school near where Lima and Sylvan townships meet.
He said both are used by buses and emergency vehicles that service not just Chelsea and Lima Township, but also Lyndon and Dexter townships as well, and he could find no record of when they were last inspected.
The culverts, both on McKinley Road, cross the Mill Creek.
Spade, who is an alternate member of the Chelsea Area Fire Authority board, said he was concerned about the safety of the heavy vehicles, such as the authority’s pumper truck and the school buses, which must cross both culverts.
The culvert north of the school has a 21-ton limit, and the one closest to the school is not weight restricted.
Board Chairman Doug Fuller asked Managing Director Roy Townsend to set up a meeting with Spade to look into his concerns.
