Lyndon Township Board Will Begin Meeting in Person

The Lyndon Township Board will begin meeting in person at the end of the month beginning with a public hearing for the township’s budget on June 22 at Township Hall at 7 p.m.

The board agreed to begin meeting in person following all current COVID protocols. In the future, as work continues on a redesign of its website, it’s expected that there will be a remote option for residents who would like to listen to the meetings, but not attend in person.

During its two-hour Zoom meeting on June 8, Zoning Administrator Scott Pacheco told the board that two permits were issued in May and there are two code enforcement civil infractions. In addition, there is one lot merger underway.

Pacheco told the Township Board that state legislators are expected to vote soon on legislation that involves short term rentals in the state, which would take away local control and a municipality’s ability to regulate them.

A revised fence ordinance has been sent to the township’s new planning consultant Zack Michaels of Carlisle Wortman for review and it’s expected that the Planning Commission will begin discussions of the proposed revisions this summer.

The Township Board also heard from two representatives from the League of Women Voters who gave a presentation explaining the redistricting process in Michigan.

If you would like to learn more about the process, more information can be found at www.lwvmi.org.

Here’s some basic information from the website.

MICHIGAN INDEPENDENT REDISTRICTING COMMISSION IS NOW ACTIVE
Every 10 years after the census is completed, new political lines are drawn for federal, state, county and some local districts. The League of Women Voters of Michigan was instrumental in passing a constitutional amendment in 2018 that requires redistricting to be completed by an independent commission instead of the political party in power. Over 9,000 applications to be part of the Commission were received and the final 13 members were chosen at random. The Michigan Independent Redistricting Commission (MICRC) had its first meeting on September 17. Anyone is invited to listen in on the meetings, which are live-streamed. The board also got an overview of the township’s insurance policy from insurance agent Kevin Decker. It’s expected in addition to items such as liability and property damage insurance, the township will add cyber security coverage in the wake of the ransomware attacks that are taking place throughout the country.

Following the public hearing for the township’s 21-22 budget, the next regular board meeting will take place on Tuesday, July 13 at 7 p.m. at Township Hall.
