(Chelsea Update would like to thank “Honest Jon” Van Hoek for the information and photo in this story.)

The Chelsea Monitors are beginning their seventh season on Sunday, May 21, bringing the great pastime of vintage base ball to the community.

Everyone is invited to come out and join the fun. The home opener begins at 1 p.m. at Timbertown Park on Sibley Road against the Royal Oak Wahoos. Please bring lawn chairs/blankets and some refreshments.

Our goal is to provide a unique, entertaining and affordable attraction to town.  No admission charged at our matches, so they’re several hundred dollars cheaper than going to a Tigers game, says “Honest Jon” Van Hoek, captain of the team.

The team practices regularly and anyone interested in trying their hand at vintage base ball is invited to join. No experience required, just a desire to join a fun local group playing for the love of the game and a connection to community.

And non-players invited, too. If you like to keep score at ballgames, come be a tallykeeper with us. Or come play some music at a home match, take photos or any other creative addition to this community project.
