Gateway Restoration continues with the Top 10 most common damages that occur in the home covering week two with #9 – Theft and Vandalism (or Breaking and Entering).

Deanna Robbins, co-owner of Gateway said “Like last week’s collapse damage, theft and vandalism only represents around 1 percent of the insurance claim related damages we see in the Chelsea area.

Commercial property and residential property  B & E’s (breaking in entering) – usually results in broken windows, door and/or door jam damage.”

Robbins said, “I recall one claim, where the homeowner was out of town and someone used their outside hose spigot and left the hose on – flooding their entire basement. But the absolute worst we have encountered (with the most damage), was a landlord who went to check on his rental home after the renter moved out.  Upon entering the home, he discovered someone had completely stripped all of the light fixtures, flooring, appliances, even the light switch covers – everything was gone.”

Robbins offers this advice: “Should you ever encounter damage to your home from a break-in, remember homeowners insurance protects your home and personal property. For example, if a burglar breaks into your house by smashing your window, and they steal your personal belongings, homeowners insurance can pay to replace your belongings and fix the broken window. It is also a good idea to take safety measures to properly protect your home.

Many insurance companies offer discounts for installing alarm systems, a doorbell camera, etc., because you are taking preventative measures to protect your home and reduce the risk.”

Gateway Restoration offers these tips when filing an insurance claim for B&E:

  • Report the crime to the police. You will need to provide the police report to your insurance company in order to make a claim.
  • Have emergency repairs done. If your door was busted open or a window was broken, have it repaired, as soon as possible. Be sure to keep your receipts for reimbursement by your insurance company.
  • Take photos or video of the damage. Document as much as possible – show areas of your home that were damaged and where missing items were stolen.
  • File a claim with your insurance company. Be prepared to provide as much information as possible on personal belongings that were stolen (where and when your item was purchased, estimated value, brand, model, etc.).

Finally, Robbins shares a few tips from Sergeant Richard Kinsey of the Chelsea Police Department in this brief video.
