Wade Pregitzer, a local farmer and vendor at both the Bushel Basket and Saturday Farmers’ Market, educated visitors about the health benefits of buying produce from local farmers at the Chelsea Wellness Center on National Agriculture Day, March 19.

He answered questions about what Community Supported Agriculture is and how it can not only save a family money but also the importance of knowing the farmers from which you purchase your food.

Begun as a roadside stand in 1996, Pregitzer Farm Market has expanded its operation to include four greenhouses and has grown from 10 CSA shares in 2007 to 120 shares in 2012, he said. Pregitzer sells vegetables and plants at four farmers’ markets.

He continues to “encourage communities to eat healthy, locally produced items from the farm.”

It’s like your own garden without the work, he said.

Joining a local CSA gives folks the opportunity to eat fresh fruits and vegetables, know where their food is coming from, and also support and preserve a farm family by keeping food dollars local.

His CSA runs for 12 weeks beginning on July 14 and ending at the end of September and includes everything from cucumbers to melons, sweet corn to squash, beans, beets, carrots and cauliflower, kale, peppers, onions cabbage and greens.

At the farm, there are special events like melon, corn and fall festivals. Field trips for local school children, private parties, a corn maze, pumpkin patch, petting zoo, straw crawl and hayrides around the farm. Plus, there’s a farm market as well.
