On Monday, Chelsea Kiwanis members will hear from Jennifer Fischer from the Chelsea P.T.O.

She, and some members of the organization will update us on the work they have been doing. They serve both North Creek and South Meadows Elementary schools. They purchase books for the classrooms, finance special projects like last year’s laptop carts for South Meadows, fund individual teacher grants, meals for teachers during conferences, conduct staff appreciation events, and volunteer for school events and projects.

There are only two fundraisers, Bulldog Jog and Box Tops for Education. The Jog raised $19,000 in 2017, but 2018 is not quite there.

Anyone can help by going to https://www.gofundme.com/Chelsea-PTO-Bulldog-Jog-2018.

The box tops dropped off at school or Polly’s raised $4,000 last year.

An important part of their mission is to hold free community events for kids and their parents. Coming up – Family Fun Night on Nov. 16 from 6:30-8 p.m. at North Creek.

Many cool activities will be there, including Mr. Robinson’s dance party. Science Night on Feb. 22, 2019 at WSEC and Reading Night on March 1, 2019 at North are upcoming.

Kiwanis would like to thank Allen Cole for his hospitality hosting the Annual Halloween Party and Costume Contest, and to Wendy Cole for graciously photographing the winners. Thank you, too, to the SRSLY mascot who was on hand giving out candy.

A tough job was handled well by the Chelsea High School Key Club judging Halloween costumes. The many young folks, (and some adults, too), arrived at Cole Funeral Chapel parking lot in their creatively designed costumes, and enjoyed cider, doughnuts, pretzels and peanuts.

Last Monday, Kiwanis heard from Eric McCalla, president of the Chelsea Community Fair Board. This summer’s fair was the second best since the fair began in 1937.

There are 27 members on the fair board and all are returning next year. There is a lot of work done by the volunteer members, each having a specialty needed to maintain and operate the fairgrounds.

This year’s major project for those volunteer board members is constructing a 60×120 foot building at the south end of the fairgrounds. This will allow more vendors and other groups to have an indoor spot, as they had to turn away two vendors this summer.

The board has maintained an excellent relationship with the carnival company that provides the Midway for the fair. This company usually works bigger county and state fairs, but likes to come to Chelsea, one of the largest community fairs in the state.

The club meeting begins each Monday at 6:15 p.m. in the St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea Hospital cafeteria, and the speakers begin at about 6:45 p.m. Everyone is invited to the club’s meetings to learn about Kiwanis.
