Anne Marie Bradley Comeau
of Chelsea

Died peacefully of congestive heart failure on Sunday, December 17, 2017 surrounded by loving family.

She led a life fully dedicated to her family, public education, and service to her community. Anne was born in Boston, MA on January 5, 1934 to William Robert Bradley and Marguerite Sylvia Dupuis. Anne graduated from Notre Dame Academy and the Forsythe School of Dental Hygiene. During this time, she met the love of her life, Edward J. Comeau, who had her name painted on the nose of a B26 bomber stationed in Korea 1953-54. They married on May 25, 1957 and raised four daughters while living in a variety of places.

In Livonia, MI, Anne became involved in the local PTO and civic association which sparked her passion for community activism. After a three-year adventure in Buenos Aires, Argentina and a seven-year stint in Fort Washington, PA, the family settled Chelsea, MI in 1978.

Anne’s interests included quilting, tennis, theater, and genealogical research as world travel, but her innate talent was the ability to work within organizations for positive community change.

Anne’s principal work was on the Chelsea School Board where she served from 1981-1993, including five years as President. Overlapping those responsibilities, she served on the Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD) Board of Trustees for 18 years. Her work there included two terms as President, and leading a delegation invited to the White House in 1992 to celebrate Thomas Fleming being named National Teacher of the Year. In her work with the Michigan Association of School Boards, Anne served as a consultant to districts in their superintendent searches and self-assessments.

In 1993, the Michigan Senate and House passed a Concurrent Resolution of Tribute in recognition of her contribution to public education at the local, county, and state levels.

Chelsea provided the opportunity for Anne to thrive and apply her special organizational skills across several civic groups – Faith in Action, United Way, and the Chelsea Senior Center by serving on their boards. Each one of these organizations is stronger because of her work. Her style was to stay out of the limelight, and work toward building strong functional foundations. So much so that in 2015 this legacy of service was recognized by Faith in Action, which presented Anne with the Howard S. Holmes Humanitarian of the Year Award. This award highlighted her commitment to education from the youngest to the oldest and to compassion for all.

In addition to husband Edward, Anne is survived by daughters Cynthia Comeau DiVitto and her husband Anthony of Waterville OH, Margaret Comeau Delaney and her husband Brian of Ann Arbor, MI, Sarah Jeanne Comeau-Proegler and her husband David of Chelsea, MI, Laura Anne Brown and her husband Paul of Perrysburg, OH. She was an important influence in the lives of her grandchildren Nathan Brown, Henry Brown, Spencer Brown, Zoe Proegler, Matthew Proegler, Bennett Proegler and was known to them fondly as “Nana.”

Anne was preceded in death by her parents William and Marguerite, and by her siblings Marguerite Gloria Thomas, William Robert Bradley, Jr., and James Llewelyn Bradley.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, December 22, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Chelsea with V. Rev. Dr. William J. Canon Turner officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

In later life, he loved vacationing with his wife Ileen and spending time with his family at his home on North Lake. If you ever went to dinner with this tough old WWII vet with a heart of gold, you were in for a fight if you tried to pick up the tab. He loved to eat, drink and be merry virtually until the day he died. He would not, however, play bingo!

Dick was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who always put family first.  Dick was the beloved father of Karna (Randy) Piebenga of Haslett, Kathy (Russ Ferguson) Kinsey of Ann Arbor and Rich (Toni) Kinsey of Chelsea. He was a wise, fun-loving grandfather – who could be trusted with a secret – to five grandchildren: Robert Brandt of Dewitt, Chris (Toni) Chambers of Ann Arbor, Stacey (Rachel Hudson) Chambers of Decatur, GA, Rick (Ashlee) Kinsey of Vulcan, and Peter Kinsey of Traverse City. Dick was a great-grandfather to Nicholas, Jacob and Tyler Brandt all of DeWitt. He was a loving uncle to Shirley, Lois and Betty. He was the Godfather of Frank (Denise) Moore of England—who he became very close with especially later in life.

Dick will be missed by his family and all who knew him for his quick wit, great stories, big smile and generous nature. He was an outstanding example to his family of what a “good man” should be. Dick’s life was an embodiment of—as he joked 50 years ago—“Another job, well done, by your friendly Strohman.”

The family wishes to thank the entire staff at Silver Maples, the care givers of Synergy and Arbor Hospice for their outstanding care but more importantly for the love he felt while being cared for. A special thanks to “Bertie” for her kind words and service keeping the feisty old vet in line during some long nights toward the end.

Cremation has taken place and a family memorial will be planned for a later date. Burial will be at Oak Grove Cemetery, Chelsea. The family urges well-wishers to enjoy time with their families, give to the charity of their choice and raise a glass to the man who will be remembered by his family as the Greatest of the “Greatest Generation.”

Her introduction to community activism occurred when Mary moved to Ann Arbor in 1972 and joined the group Parents for Alternative Learning, advocates for open classroom teaching in the Ann Arbor Schools. It was during this time that Ed Pierce, Ann Arbor’s mayor, recruited Mary to work on his successful campaign for the state senate. It was there that Mary displayed her firm grasp of campaign politics. She went on to play a prime role in the Ed Pierce campaign for governor.

Mary then became active in Lana Pollack’s successful campaign for the state senate. Upon forming her senate staff, Senator Pollack tapped Mary as a legislative assistant. Mary was a trusted and effective legislative assistant for the 10 years preceding her swearing in to the House of Representatives.

Mary attended Washtenaw Community College and Eastern Michigan University. She was awarded a degree in political science, Summa Cum Laude, by Eastern Michigan University.

Among her many committees and boards, Mary served as chair of the Washtenaw Community College Board of Trustees, as a Board member of the Ann Arbor Community Center and as a board member of the Democratic Michigan Women’s Campaign Fund.

Mary was a creative gardener and an avid reader. She took much joy in time spent at Lake Michigan and in particular, Beaver Island. These good times were made all the more memorable because they were invariably shared with her daughters and their families.

Mary’s quick wit, great affection for friends and colleagues, and love of family will be sorely missed.

She was preceded in death by her son Karl Kierner and is survived by 4 children: Patricia Smith of Arizona, Ted (Ruth) Graham, Vickie (George) Abidin, and Cherrie (Glenn) Dean, all of Michigan, plus 10 grandchildren and more than a dozen great-grandchildren.

In 1951, Mary and her husband Charles left rural Illinois and joined the great Northward Migration for the chance of better jobs and a better living for their growing family. They settled in Ypsilanti where Charles worked as a welder in the decommissioned WWII bomber plant at Willow Run, and Mary worked in a dry cleaning shop. The marriage came to an unfortunate end in 1960 and she soon remarried.

Mary was small in stature, barely 5 feet tall but large in spirit, feisty and determined. She labored at many jobs including at the King Seeley factory and the Argus plant to make sure her children had everything they wanted and needed. Despite a lack of education and means, she obtained training as a beautician, saved her money and bought a house on Ann Arbor’s Old West Side with a small beauty salon attached. She worked there as owner-operator till she was well past the age of 75.

Mary enjoyed cooking, gardening, music, and in her later years, shopping and dining out. Mary loved her children more than anything. Against all odds, she achieved her aim of providing them a better life and better opportunities. Despite her many health problems, she lived independently until the last few months of her life.

She died peacefully in hospice with family around her on Sept. 28, 2017 at 89 years of age.

Nancy Jane Harris (Elder)
of Chelsea, Michigan

Passed peacefully in her sleep on July 5, 2017.

Nancy spent most of her 87 years in Petersburg, Michigan. She claimed to be a tomboy in her youth and loved climbing trees and bicycling. Her parents, Stanley Alfred Elder and Florence Mabel Elder (Huston) had five children, Nancy being the eldest. Predeceased by her parents and three brothers, Blair and Paul in 1940 and Dennis in 2016, Nancy was incredibly close to her sister Rosemary with whom she shared a lifelong friendship.

She graduated from Petersburg High School in 1947 as Valedictorian. She attended the University of Toledo 1948-1949 and was an aspiring journalist.

Nancy married Richard Lynn Harris (deceased) after Dick returned from serving in the Navy during  WWII. They were married 49 years, just a few months shy of their 50th anniversary. They were devoted parents to three children: Diane Lee Lirette (Thomas), Steven Alfred Harris, and Lynne Alison Crandall: (David).

Nancy was an involved parent, serving for many years as Campfire Girl leader for Lee and Lynne and as den mother for Steve’s Cub Scout troop. She doted on her 8 grandchildren: Christie, Keira, Shannon, Heather, Miles, Erin, Jeffrey, and Scott. Nancy was ready to play, read, walk in the woods and cook over a campfire with them, and she always fed them heart-shaped waffles when they slept over. She often exclaimed in pleasure over her good fortune in living long enough to see her 2 great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Teddy.

She served as the Senior Auditor for the University of Michigan College of Engineering and retired in 1991 after 14 years of service.

A Methodist for more than 50 years, Nancy used her creative talents and deep faith in Jesus to teach Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. She enjoyed many an outing or visiting speaker with the United Methodist Women’s group. Her particular joy was to lead the Missions committee to help spread Jesus’ teaching around the world.

Nancy was involved in her community and loved reading, baking, birding and gardening. She loved to camp, fish and hunt for morel mushrooms up north in the spring. Nancy had a great curiosity about history and archaeology and if she wasn’t reading the Bible or a birding book, she would be exploring times past. She was a great mom, a loving wife, a hard worker and a good friend. The world was a better place because Nancy Harris was in it.

A memorial service will be held at the Petersburg United Methodist Church (152 Saline St., Petersburg, MI 49270) on Monday, July 10. Visiting with family starts at 10 a.m., service at 11, followed immediately by a luncheon in the church hall.

If you are interested in making a donation in Nancy’s honor, mission work was very important to her. If you’d like to honor her this way, make a check out to the Petersburg United Methodist Church and write Mission Work – Nancy Harris in the memo section and send it to the Church address above.

Winslow Grosvenor Fox
Chelsea, Michigan

Winslow Grosvenor Fox, M.D. took his last breath on Saturday, March 18, 2017.  He practiced family medicine in Ann Arbor for 34 years and served on the staff at St Joseph Mercy Hospital.  Many will remember his kind smile, tender demeanor, and eagerness to share the promises of his heavenly father.

Winslow was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan, the 3rd of 4 children born to Howard Stowell Fox and Dorothy Prentice Fox.  Inspired by Albert Schweitzer’s reverence for life and desire to alleviate suffering, he studied medicine at the University of Chicago (M.D. 1948). While singing in the choir he met his future bride, Elizabeth Ferwerda.  The two were drawn together by their desire to do missionary work.  Married in 1945, they went to Puerto Rico where Winslow served as a doctor in Humacao.  Their time as medical missionaries ended abruptly when the Army summoned him to serve as a physician for a Puerto Rican regiment in the Korean Conflict. Winslow quickly moved his wife and 2 daughters to be near his brother in Ann Arbor.  On his return, Winslow and Elizabeth raised their family, often filling their home with music and people from other countries.  They were very active in both the First United Methodist Church and The Word of God Community.  Later they attended St. Luke Lutheran Church and the University Lutheran Chapel (ULC).

In 2002, Winslow and Elizabeth moved to the Chelsea Retirement Community (CRC), a decision they never regretted.  In 2011, Winslow’s beloved bride joined the Heavenly Choir.  Winslow continued to attend church every Sunday thanks to faithful friends from ULC.

Winslow was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings and is survived by his 4 loving daughters: Laurie Fox, Carolyn (Dave) Inglis, Patsy (John) Bruenger and Marcia Fox; 7 grandchildren: Damien (Lesli Bjork) and Andrew (Caroline Fogarty) Rozendal, Emilyn and Dan (Sage Curtis) Inglis, Peter Bruenger, Beth (Dave) McKenzie, Amy McClung; and 4¾ great grandchildren, as well as many who were considered part of the family.
