Obituaries 2019

Glendora Neff Graham

‘Glen’ – as she was known to her friends and family – slipped away quietly at the age of 94 on December 26, 2019 in her residence at Silver Maples.

Although she had diminished greatly over the preceding several months, she retained her humor, wit, and attachment to people up until the final 24 hours when she embarked on her own ‘Victory Lap,’ within the recesses of her own mind and soul.

Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Aunt, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, Friend. Glendora was an ‘Alpha Woman’ like her mother before her. She graduated from Wayne State University at the age of 20 and taught school for 4 years before she met a strong, gentle man who was comfortable being married to a strong ‘Alpha Woman.’ She and George Graham married in 1949.

Glen and George had 2 children, and she continued to teach in various settings, on and off, both full- and part-time throughout her entire life. While continuing to work, she also advanced her professional training to earn both a Masters and an Education Specialist Degree in Education. To that end, Glendora was a committed, vibrant, energetic, and creative teacher. She moved through her professional life assembling life-long friendships with other teachers, administrators, parents, and children of all ages until her retirement in 1983.

But it was her children – Kathy (m. to David Falkner) and David – and their families to whom she was most devoted. Her grandchildren – Nathan (Julia), Adam, Perrin (Kevin and great-granddaughter Aryo), and Caili – remained the center of her and George’s life until the day she died.

Captivated by her enthusiasm for life, they each drew her into their sports, music, drama, travel, reading, and friendships. To that end, THEIR friends also became her friends. Everyone…knew Glen.

Over the years of her professional career and well into her retirement she traveled, camped, and toured the world – with her children, her husband, and grandchildren. They all traveled with her throughout Mexico, Canada and the United States, Central Europe, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and South America. She was particularly proud of George’s Scottish heritage and made several sojourns to ‘the Old Country’ with kids, grandkids, and with George. Glen and George celebrated 67 years of marriage at the time of George’s death in 2016.

Glendora had a passion like no other for clothes, jewelry, and ‘color.’ Her homes were filled with the art work of her children and other (decidedly more talented!) family members. She collected, stored, mounted, wore, and exchanged art as she traveled through life. She also was an avid, indiscriminate reader: fiction, non-fiction, journalism, poetry; classics, magazines, children’s works, professional work, amateur work. She was not a writer; nor was she a musician. She was a ‘communicator’ and a listener.

She was inquisitive; a ‘learner’ and a problem solver. She was a fluid thinker; flexible and resilient. She enjoyed spontaneity, laughter, and intelligent exchange. She infused those around her with laughter and good humor. She particularly enjoyed social exchange through games of all sorts with friends and family and, more or less, ‘quietly challenged’ everyone to keep pace with her – with her humor, her wit, her charm, and her passion for life.

Glendora’s single disappointment and sadness in her life was that she – rather than George – had to be the partner who soldiered on alone. To that end, Glen soldiered forward following multiple strokes, continuing to make new friends in the context of her diminished health, but still valuing the ‘old.’ She thrived on ‘air,’ humor, laughter, and hugs every day of her life. Were she here in this moment…she would graciously thank each of you for being her friend, for making her laugh, and for nourishing her Spirit.

I come to the Lord with one request;

May the mighty lighthouse always choose

To be the friend of boats and crews;

But if one day it may decide

To lead us to rocks and make us collide,

I’ll accept my fate and live with the fish,

Because it’s the mighty, mighty lighthouse’s wish.”

Bernice “Sunny” Morse
of Chelsea

Died after a short illness Tuesday, October 29, 2019, at the Chelsea Retirement Community in Chelsea, Michigan.

She was 103 years old.

Born in Warren, Pennsylvania, in 1916, Sunny married William C. Morse of Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1937. Sunny and Bill lived for 70 years in Ann Arbor where Bill earned a PhD and became a professor of education and psychology at the University of Michigan.

The couple personally built their own home on Penncraft Court in 1944 as part of a cooperative of friends. The cooperative spirit of the court continued over the years to provide a close-knit community for them and their children.

Sunny’s immediate family includes daughter Susan S. Morse of Chelsea, Michigan; son James D. Morse and daughter-in-law Katherine Gantz Morse of Granite Falls, Washington; and grandson Jeremy G. Morse, PhD, of Chicago. Sunny also enjoyed her extended family as aunt, great aunt and great-great aunt to Lori, Dennis and Andrew Dolan; David, Karen and Jamison Morse; Jessamy, Matt, Sam and Mack Mariani; Jan and Ray Toggweiler and their family; Bunny and Glenn Valli and their family; and Susie Greenman and her family.

Sunny was active all her life in civic and volunteer service. As part of her work as a lifetime member of the League of Women Voters, she monitored the juvenile court system, served on the state board, supporting fledgling local leagues around the state, and registered new voters in the high schools. She volunteered as a tutor of children and as an exercise class instructor for seniors.

Her love of learning and dedication to her community work led her to take classes in each of these areas. She had a life-long interest in women’s rights and women’s issues in the law and audited legal classes at the university. She also participated in peace vigils over the years.

Sunny often hosted Bill’s students in her home as well as those with whom she and Bill shared deep long-term friendships.

The family lived for 14 summers at the University of Michigan Fresh Air Camp near Pinckney, where Bill was director. As one example of Sunny’s special caring for the campers, she baked a cake for every camper who had a birthday while at camp.

As a young woman, Sunny wanted to be an architect and worked for several years at an architectural firm. She took an active role in designing their original home and the various additions over the years. She worked during the Second World War at PRCO and later at Survey Research and Kitchen Port.

Starting in the 1940s, the Morse family vacationed every year in McGregor Bay, Ontario, where they were initially part of a cooperative and later built an A-frame cottage of their own. Sunny and Bill spent several months of the summer there every year until they were in their eighties.

Sunny and Bill sold their home on Penncraft Court and moved together to the Chelsea Retirement Community in 2006. Bill passed in January 2008. In the ensuing years, Sunny continued to thrive in the caring atmosphere of this community.

Sunny will be remembered as a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, and a spirited woman of great humor, grace, commitment, and intellect. She will be very deeply missed.

There is no memorial service planned at this time. Commemorative contributions may be sent to the Chelsea Retirement Community Benevolent Care Fund or the Michigan League of Women Voters.

Jonathan J. Westcott
passed away at the age of 24 on August 3, 2019.

Jonny entered this world a firecracker on July 4, 1995, the son of Jay Westcott and Theresa Royce.

He is survived by his Mother, his Stepfather Ryan Bergler, his Sisters, Loretta Westcott and Ellen Bergler, his Brothers, Romell Westcott, Luther Westcott and Solomon Bergler, his Grandpa, Rick Westcott, his Nana and Grandpapa, Mary and Mark Royce, and many Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. Jonny was preceded in death by his father and his Grandma, Linda Westcott and Aunt Monica Royce.

As the rowdy oldest brother in a big family, Jonny was the master of the chaos. Many family stories begin with “Remember that time Jonny…”. He broke furniture and bones, lost teeth, had a lot of bad ideas, and made life more fun for everyone he knew.

In high school he brought this to the football field, earning all-conference honors at defensive end with The Manchester Flying Dutchmen, making up for his lack of size in the position with speed, strength, smarts, and intensity. Jonny graduated from Manchester High School, class of 2013, and attended Washtenaw Community College, where he took courses in pursuit of a career in the field of technology.

He was passionate and curious about the world, and spent endless hours as a self-taught student of psychology, politics, and society. If you spent time with him, you would learn something you didn’t know. He loved comedy and music and went to more than 20 concerts with his siblings this year.

Jonny was honest, charming, funny, and brilliant. Our lives will be forever enriched for knowing and loving him.

The family will receive friends Saturday, September 7, 2019 from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Staffan-Mitchell Funeral Home. Jonny will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony.

Expressions of sympathy can be made to Faith in Action.

Evelyn (Haddad) Freiman, loving mother of nine, beloved grandmother and great-grandmother, dear aunt and sister, left this earth at the age of 89 years peacefully in her sleep, surrounded by love and family on August 5, 2019 at Silver Maples Senior Living Center in Chelsea, Michigan.

She was the widow of Joseph Robert Freiman, to whom she was married for 49 years until his death in 2001. She joins her husband, her parents, her sister, Catherine, and her brother, Joseph, who preceded her in death.

Born in Detroit on August 4, 1930, Evelyn was the eldest daughter of Fred J. and Nellie (Hunkus) Haddad. She was a 1948 graduate of St. Benedict High School in Highland Park, and, after serving an internship in Brooklyn NY, earned a Registered Nurse diploma in 1951 from Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit. Her training made it possible for her to help in the care of her parents and her husband during their terminal illnesses.

She was a pediatric nurse at Mt. Carmel intermittently over the course of 20 years, while she raised her growing family, and following that in the early 1970s, at St. Mary Mercy Hospital in Livonia. She briefly cared for elderly patients at a nursing home in Plymouth before returning to pediatric nursing at the Hawthorne Center for Children in Northville until she retired in 1987. She volunteered in taking manual blood pressure readings at St. William parish in Walled Lake and actively maintained her license to practice until 2014. She was a proud participant in the Harvard Nurses Health Study, a longitudinal survey to identify risk factors for major chronic diseases in women.

She spent her childhood summers at her cousin’s farm near Youngstown, Ohio, and many summers with her husband and children on camping trips in Michigan.

Her vacation travels took her from the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island to the White House in Washington D.C. and across the Atlantic to the Blarney Castle in Cork, Ireland; from Cooperstown to BeanTown, and Small Point to Big Sur; she camped at Tahquamenon Falls and the Great Smoky Mountains; she admired the wind sculpted dragon trees at Scripps Park in La Jolla and the dusty vineyards of Paso Robles; she toured the Houston Space Center and the Alamo; and hiked at the Crater of the Sun in Maui and the sacred vortexes in Sedona. She made homes in Michigan in Oak Park, in Detroit’s Rosedale Park, in Plymouth, in West Bloomfield, on Doc & Tom Lake in the city of Lake near Clare, in Walled Lake, and finally in Chelsea.

She lived her life filled with laughter and dignity. She loved babies and animals. She was a passionate learner and had a constant intellectual curiosity. She was a deft Scrabble player. She was independent and amazingly resourceful—never underestimating the utility of a sturdy cardboard box or a humble safety pin. She was a note-taker and a list-maker. She dressed meticulously. In her eighties, when she came to resemble Queen Elizabeth II in appearance, she would bring out a bedazzled tiara to wear on her birthday.

She was a consummate hostess and took great pleasure in bringing people together. She read music and could play the piano, aspired to play the accordion, and also, on occasion, played the derbake Lebanese drum. She enjoyed cooking and baking; and leaves a legacy of culinary tradition. Her vast collection of recipes included favorites that she recalibrated in the margins, doubled and tripled, to serve large numbers. She savored chocolate with a twinkle in her eye. She was a skilled seamstress and quilter and created several original works of stained-glass art.

She was an avid reader on topics of nutrition and spirituality and was in the Ann Arbor audience when the Dali Lama spoke at Crisler Arena and when Deepak Chopra lectured at the Power Center. She took charge of her home and large family with unbounded energy and the precision of a drill sergeant. She taught her children the virtues of order, education, and family unity, and modeled her life with strength, optimism and faith. She will be profoundly missed.

She leaves her nine children: Joseph F. (Frances) Freiman of Traverse City, Mary Lou Freiman of Ann Arbor, Thomas K. (Diane) Freiman of Plymouth, Therese M. (Stanley) Peyton of Chelsea, Kathleen A. (John) Hartel of Grand Rapids, Judith E. (Marc) Front of Oak Park, Gerard M. (Claudia) Freiman of Saginaw, Patricia L. (Allan) Blascak of Lake Orion, and David J. (Catherine) Freiman of Ann Arbor; 16 grandchildren: Jonathan L. (Beth) Freiman of Ann Arbor, Matthew L. (Jessica) Freiman of Stafford NH, Shaun K. Freiman of Washington D.C., Colin W. Hartel of Long Beach CA, Phillip J. (Brittney) Front of Pinole CA, Kaitlyn K. Hartel of Denver CO, Catullus D. Freiman of Saginaw, Adam C. Blascak of Hamtramck, Michele N. (Ryan) Pozzo of Waterford, Adonis T. Freiman of Saginaw, Alexander E. Hartel of Grand Rapids, Stefanie M. Peyton of Ypsilanti, Daniel C. Blascak of E. Lansing, Rebecca N. Blascak of Boston MA, Lance A. Freiman and Meryl E. Freiman of Ann Arbor; and 1 great-grandchild: Elijah L. Freiman of Ann Arbor.

She is survived by her brothers, Gerard A. Haddad of Dearborn, and Henry J. (Nicole) Haddad of Hilliard OH; her sisters-in-law, Patricia A., R.S.M., and Agnes T. Freiman of Pittsburgh PA; nieces and nephews: Hope J. Haddad of Hilliard OH, Christina M. (Robert) Burnham of Sterling Heights, Lynda C. (Gerald) Paczkowski of Rochester Hills, Martin T. William Russell ‘Bill’ Lowery
Dexter, Michigan

Age 97, passed away Thursday, March 7, 2019 at Hillside Terrace in the company of his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents Ray J. and Fern (Follmer) Lowery, all nine siblings (Alvin Lowery, Marian Mosier, Patricia Nygren, Ray J. Lowery Jr., Joyce Fuller, George Lowery, Dolores Heinrichs, Darrell Lowery, and John Lowery), his wife Beverly Witt, his sons Mike Larkin and Gavin Barclay, and son-in-law Gary Eddings.  Bill is survived by his daughters Patricia (Larkin) Eddings, Cathleen (Lowery) Piccione, and Barbara Tozser; his sons Ray Lowery and David Barclay; his former wife Patricia (Campbell) Lowery; and more grandchildren and great-grandchildren than you can shake a stick at.

Bill was born August 11, 1921 in Davenport, Nebraska and grew up in the sprawling metropolis of Oak, the third of 10 children, helping work his family’s farm during the difficult years of the Dust Bowl and Great Depression (not that he let those minor annoyances keep him down).  He worked his way through agriculture studies at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln (UN-L), putting those studies aside temporarily to serve his country during World War II flying B-24 bombers out of Lecce, Italy.

After V-E Day, 1Lt. Lowery turned in his uniform to complete his degree in agriculture from UN-L, which may seem odd as he then started a 35-year career managing ground services for United Airlines.

During this time, he also began what he considered his most important job: starting and raising a family with Beverly (nee Witt) and, following Beverly’s passing in 1967, with Patricia (nee Campbell). He was a loving and caring husband and father to 2, 4, 5, or 7 children, depending on how you want to count them.

Not one to sit idle, Bill also became heavily involved in Civil Air Patrol (CAP) in 1976, serving 32 years alternately as commander of two cadet squadrons (first in Michigan and later in Nebraska) as well as finance officer for CAP’s Nebraska operations.

He also became involved in Lincoln’s Optimist Club as well as being a mentor for children in UN-L’s Teammate Program.

Following his second retirement (for real, this time), he returned to Michigan to enjoy his latter decades with family and friends. He survived a stroke in 2013 which led to him moving to Hillside Terrace, “starring” in several TV commercials for Hillside, and writing his memoirs and several books of poetry.

Visitation will take place Friday, March 15 from 4 to 8 pm at Cole Funeral Chapel, 214 E. Middle Street, Chelsea, Michigan, as well as Saturday, March 16 from 10 to 11 am at St. Andrew’s United Church of Christ, 7610 Ann Arbor Street, Dexter, Michigan.  A memorial service will follow starting at 11 am.  An informal meal and sharing of memories of Bill will follow in the church’s fellowship hall.

A private burial will be at Michigan Memorial Park in Flat Rock.

Bill loved to work in the yard and in the garden. In lieu of flowers, consider an evergreen sapling – to be planted in one of Gramps’ kid’s yards. Charitable donations in Bill Lowery’s memory can either be made to St. Andrew’s UCC (at the address above) or to the Optimist Club of Lincoln via Youth Activities Corporation, c/o Treasurer Jerry Salber, 7142 Shamrock Road, Lincoln, NE 68506.  (YAC is a 501C3 nonprofit affiliated with the Optimist Club of Lincoln.)
