(Chelsea Update would like to thank Winn Nichols for the information in this story.)
Gallery 100 located at Silver Maples of Chelsea will be exhibiting Cradle Covers from Kosovo from Oct.3-30. This exhibit will be our first show in our newly renovated Gallery 100 space at Silver Maples.
The cradle covers on view are from the William G. and Yvonne Lockwood collection of Balkan material culture collected in the early 1970s as part of a research project. These well-loved cradle covers from Kosovo are unique to the region and were used as a protective and decorative cover over a baby’s cradle. These pieces are made from hand-loomed natural wool or cotton and are embellished with crocheted wool trim, with beautiful, embroidered designs and often beads or buttons added. The covers appearing in this exhibit date from approximately post-World War II-1950.
This exhibit is on loan from the MSU Museum and was curated by Dr. Yvonne Lockwood, curator emerita, MSU Museum and Lynne Swanson, cultural collections manager, MSU Museum.
Gallery hours are Monday-Friday 10 am-5 pm and Saturday-Sunday 10 am-3 pm. Gallery 100 is located at 100 Silver Maples Dr.
