Oct. 5: Chelsea Field Hockey’s Play4TheCure

(Chelsea Update would like to thank Sharon Kegerreis for the information and photo in this story.)

On Oct. 5, the CHS Stadium will be flooded in pink for the annual Play4TheCure games hosted by Chelsea Field Hockey (CFH).

On game day, traditional blue, white and gold jerseys are set aside for unifying pink attire to honor loved ones facing tough cancer battles, honor those who have lost their lives, and celebrate those who have defeated cancer.

Fans are encouraged to wear pink as well.

The Beach Middle School team hosts Greenhills School of Ann Arbor at 5:30 p.m. The Chelsea High School varsity team hosts Ann Arbor Huron at 7 p.m. All gate entrance fees will be donated to cancer research. Additional donations are encouraged at the gate and through CFH’s Play4TheCure online campaign: www.crowdrise.com/chelsea-field-hockey.

Chelsea Field Hockey began raising money for cancer research, following the cancer diagnosis of program co-founder Roxy Block in 2010. This year is particularly difficult as Block passed away in December 2017.

Block is renowned in the field hockey community for her efforts helping to launch recreation field hockey in Ann Arbor in the 1980s, and for co-founding the Washtenaw Whippets in 2004, which consisted of high school-aged youth from Chelsea, Saline, Dexter, Pinckney, Father Gabriel Richard, and Manchester schools.

Today, five of these communities have school teams, and the Chelsea Field Hockey program has evolved to include high school and middle school teams, June Whip-It Camp, spring and fall recreational teams, and Super Saturdays. Block was a well-respected leader of the Michigan High School Field Hockey Association who was focused on growing the game of field hockey in Michigan.

In addition to honoring Block’s life, Chelsea Field Hockey is also honoring longtime sideline companion and team mascot Izzy, who is enduring two types of cancer, and all loved ones affected by the disease.

CFH’s Play4TheCure games have raised more than $9,200 since using the National Foundation for Cancer Research’s Play4TheCure platform. CFH hopes to raise more than $3,000 during this season’s campaign.
