Pacheco Elected Chelsea Mayor; Iannelli, Ruddock, Mehuron Elected to Council Seats

A scene outside the polling place from Tuesday’s City Council election.

Jane Pacheco was elected as the next mayor of Chelsea Tuesday night, winning the seat with a total of 1,392 votes to Cheri Albertson’s 785 total votes according to unofficial totals.

“I’d like to thank the people of Chelsea for electing me to serve as the next mayor,” Pacheco said. “I am confident that the community will be able to move forward together and I look forward to serving everyone.”

Re-elected to City Council for a second term was Tony Iannelli who was the highest vote getter of the six candidates who ran for the three, 4-year City Council seats.

Ianelli called the campaign “an interesting one, not something the city has seen on a local level in the past.” He cited the amount of fundraising and community support as two examples of the differences since he ran four years ago.

He said, “the stiff competition made me a better candidate – having five other great candidates to go up against.”

He said he was pleased with the overall outcome and he “thanked all the candidates for their hard work on all levels.”

The second highest vote-getter was Christine (Kate) Mehuron who finished with 1,125 votes. She said she was “very happy and pleased to begin work for the city” and wanted “to thank everyone who helped get the word out for me and the other candidates who won. We couldn’t have done it without you.”

Finishing third with 1,117 votes and also elected to the council was Bill Ruddock.

“I appreciate the support of the people that I received and I hope to serve the city well,” Ruddock said, adding, “The citizens have stated the way they would like to see Chelsea move forward.”

Steven Wright finished with 824 votes, followed by Phil Sawicki with 776 votes and Dave Keiser with 744 votes.

The newly elected City Council will meet for the first time on Nov. 15 and will now need to fill the council seat vacated by Pacheco, which runs through November, 2023.
