Parents talk to your new drivers about Kelsey’s Law, which takes effect March 28

Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office logo Attention parents of new drivers, please remind them that Kelsey’s Law takes effect on March 28, which does not allow them to talk on a cell phone while driving.

According to a message from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, “Kelsey’s Law” states a driver with a level 1 or level 2 graduated license shall not use a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle either on the highway or any other street.

In this case, “use” means to initiate a call, answer a call, or listen to or engage in verbal communication via a cell phone, according to the Sheriff’s office message.

The new law does not apply to someone using a voice-operated system that is integrated into the motor vehicle.

This law applies to current and future Level 1 or 2 graduated license holders, and the Sheriff’s Office promotes the Sheriffs Telling Our Parents and Promoting Educated Drivers or “STOPPED” program as a way to work with parents of young drivers.
